China Unicom ask all employees subscribe iPhone and take on marketing responsibility

According to report from NBD.com.cn, the most popular phone all over the world now has to face its local problems in China. All employees in several branch companies of China Unicom now has to subscribe iPhone, moreover, if you can’t sell out required amount of iPhone to your friends and relatives, a reduction in next month’s salary is waiting.

Recently, an internal document of China Unicom named “Notice about provide 3G handsets to personnel” was exposed on the internet. It has said that all employees must subscribe iPhone handset and the 3G SIM card begins with 186. The subscription including an iPhone and a 186 SIM card with 200RMB in account. The handset options are iPhone 3G 8GB (black), iPhone 3Gs 16GB (black/white), iPhone 3Gs 32GB (black/white). However, all the cost will pay by the financial office first.

The employees taken in part of this subscription, automatically has the responsibility of selling iPhone and 186 packaged account during 1/11/2009 to 28/2/2010. Each successful selling of iPhone and packaged account will bring a commission of 700RMB, and each successful selling of single 186 packaged account has a commission of 50RMB-450RMB range.

The commissions will use to pay for the subscription cost which was paid by the financial office first. If you don’t get enough commission for the subscription cost, then the shortage will be cover by your salary.

At last, the document declares the deadline of application of subscription is 20th NOV. Anyone who doesn’t apply for it till then will be considered as already received the iPhone and 186 packaged account, and will receive a reduction in salary immediately to cover the cost of so called subscription.

So, how many iPhones need to sell out to avoid the reduction in salary? As the cheapest subscription: an iPhone 3G 8GB (4999RMB) and 186 packaged account (at least 96RMB/mon), you can get a commission of 750RMB which means you need to sell out 7 iPhones and 186 packaged account to cover the cost of subscription.

Official response from China Unicom:

Never release this document and all the branch companies have its own marketing strategies, but are definitely not all employees marketing strategy.

However, according to journalist from NBD.com.cn, several branch companies from south China and west-south China has definitely released the document above and informed all the employers.

A female worker from China Unicom said to reporter: I got 16 iPhones to sell, and it’s little different from the document, all the cost will count on me myself, and each selling of iPhone will bring me 100RMB reword. However, if I don’t sell out all of them by Feb next year, each one will bring me 100RMB fine. My husband and sister are helping me out, but it’s not hopeful to get there.
